The area
Olympia is a town located at the Peloponnese peninsula, known as the site of ancient Greece’s Olympic Games. It was here, that the athletes were crowned with olive tree wreaths, a gesture that reflected the vitality of being pure in spirit, strong in physical aspect and humble as a man, regardless of one’s achievement. Competing and winning an olive tree wreath showed that a true man does not compete for possessions, but for virtue.
The site hosts commencement and closure of the Olympic Games ceremonies.
According to mythology, Hercules planted an olive tree in the local temple of Hera, after completing his 12 labors. It was known as the “callistefanos olive tree”, from which the wraths were made, the greatest distinction for each athlete.
These olive groves and their fruits are our precious heritage.
